I'm WTF and IBBF and we are told to keep our hands up any time you are doing fighting techniques. I think that the Olympic fighters for Tea Kwon Do are the same as fencing fighters in that the only thing that matters is if you got a point on your opponent. Everything eles is out the window.

Amosral Says:
We know them as double turning kicks
Amosral Says:
I'm sure there's an element of habit to it, but it's the olympics, so no aspect of any sport goes without being analysed very carefully.

I get what you're saying and I thought the same thing when I did MMA but when I stwitched over to TKD I learned that you can still have a lot of power with jump kicks. It's the twist of your hip not the pivot of the foot that gives u ur power. When ur on the ground u have to pivot ur foot to twist ur hips but in the air u just throw ur hips. I'll admit it's harder, but when u get it down I find that a lot of jump kicks are very effective. Especialy since u can put ur weight behind a lot of them
0311lones Says:
Maybe they just get complacent from doing it for so long and start forgetting about the basic stuff
Amosral Says:
Some more advanced fighters tend to develop this habit, I think it's meant to draw out people into attempting kicks and thus getting openings for counters? not certian. Personally I don't like it either, and at my club we always train to keep your hands up, and we're WTF.

I get why they don't throw that many punches but I think they should keap their hands up more for defence. In my gym we have many different forms of hand defences but they never let you fight with your hands at your sides. Than again I'm in ATA not Korean TKD or Olympic TKD. Either way I just can't see the benifet in them fighting with their hands down like that.
0311lones Says:
they're called switch kicks. at least thats what I know them as, they could have a more technical sounding name too.
NapolionTNT22098 Says:

Work on flexibility, try hard, pay attention. A good student uses their brain as well as their brawn. Good luck. :)
Amosral Says:
In WTF (world taekwondo federation) which is the olympic style, you do not punch to the face during competition. (in other words for sport fighting) you can punch to the midsection, but it dosn't usually score that well, and is usually used as a counter. A club that teaches Taekwondo as an all-round martial art will include many hand techniques.
