Holy shit I used to live there.

I find that your response was unnecessary. You're probably a very unhappy little man.

The aircraft had blue foam baffles in the fuel tank to prevent fuel from sloshing around, and to prevent fuel atomization and fire in a more typical crash. You can see the foam in the photos. The plane still had fuel, and those nearby described smelling like avgas. There was also a large volume of water/alcohol for the ADI system and boil-off cooling system, which may have prevented a fire as luck would have it.
Smukeyz Says:
Actually because the aircraft didnt have any fuel left, fucking retard.

Airplane lost elevator trim... RIP all dead... sadly another warbird was lost
jpatt1000 Says:
That's good to hear. Everything I've been reading was saying they were "unsure of the future of the races" which to me sounds like "we might be done".
Metalicalypse Says:
Thats scary and sad :( R.I.P

No fireball - plane ran out of fuel? RIP to those involve.

There hasn't been any mention of canceling the races. But they are looking at recommendations to test the planes better before racing, and possibly moving the pylon away from the spectator area.

:( so sad i pray for those that lost there lives

i don't have a problem generaly with old people flying planes. i just don't want them in this kind of a flying circus. medicals stick to the rules we have now. so it doesn't mean a lot when they say he could fly. by the way, the ntsb has not droped the possibility of an pilot failure till today. fact is, they don't know exactly what happens that day and maybe they will never do.
TheMonkeymasher Says:
good grief
jpatt1000 Says:
I can't believe they would consider cancelling future races because of this crash. In LeMans in '55 80+ people were killed on the last corner when a car flew off the track. I sometimes wonder what the point of racing these planes is. I mean we've learned all we can from them, then I think of Steve McQueen's comment in LeMans. "A lot of people go through life doing things poorly. Racing is important to men who do it well. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."
FiveCentsPlease Says:
Only if the NTSB report cites pilot age as a contributing factor. The pilot's medical was current and there are pilots older than 74 still flying airplanes. The evidence points to a possible control malfunction which led to G-forces (and likely control stick forces) that would be too much for any pilot regardless of age or health. The latest NTSB updates also allude to concerns that the aircraft was flying at speeds higher than previously tested on race day.
rantanplan178 Says:
the problem with this crash is --- the pilot was 74 years old!!!! i couldn't believe that as i heard that fact. i mean we don't even allow truck drivers to go with their trucks commercially at this age and that pilot flew a highly pimped p-51 ww2 combat aircraft 67 years of age iself at an public airshow. why is it allowed to do stunts like that at this age commercially? it's absolutly crazy for me to have grandfathers flying such planes

@bashfulbrother Bro, he crashed into a section of seating in front of the grandstand. Of course, people were killed. They aren't viewable of this tape, thankfully, but there were body parts everywhere.
