actually he did cease to be a shinigami because he stated himself he was going "to war with the shinigami" ergo he was going to war with a group, ichigo wasn't a shinigami he was a substitute before going to soul society and then became a representative. It is possible and true to define shinigami as a group.

At which point they ceased to be members of soul society. They didn't cease being shinigami though. On a similar vein Ichigo had shinigami powers before even having heard of soul society. It's pretty impossible to define shinigami as a group when you notice all of the inconsistencies that come with calling them as such.

Wrong! All shinigami have zanpakuto and kido, but not all people with zanpakuto and kido are shinigami. You have to go through an academy and initiation to become a full shinigami. therefore it is a group.
